Seven preconceptions about alarms
1. The system won't work when I need it to.
State-of-the-art burglar alarms monitor themselves and report all incidents. These include, for example, a weak battery, outages in the wireless network, manipulation or sabotage. The alarm panel also monitors the connected components to ensure they are working correctly.
2. Installing an alarm will wreck my apartment. It will look as if thieves have already broken in.
Wireless systems operate without cables and installation is clean. No messy wires are needed and walls do not need to be broken through. Installation of a wireless alarm system in a detached house usually takes just one day. Ideally, wired alarm systems are installed when the building is under construction. If you would like to retrofit an alarm, the best thing to do is contact an alarm expert, who can advise you on how best to install a system under the prevailing structural conditions.
3. An alarm system is expensive.
This is not true. Alarm systems are not as expensive as you think. ABUS offers self-install starter alarm kits. 4. An alarm system is complicated to operate.
Arming and disarming an alarm system can be linked with modern electronic lock cylinders. This means that unlocking a door and simultaneously disarming the burglar alarm system is a simple process that happens at the turn of the key in the door lock. Locking the door with synchronous activation of the burglar alarm system works in exactly the same way. This means that you do not have to operate the alarm system separately, but it is simply integrated into your daily movements.
5. I don't have anything worth stealing.
But you do have something that can be damaged. The damage caused by a break-in usually costs more to repair than replacing what was stolen. Victims also suffer the trauma after having been robbed. Many of our customers say that they no longer feel safe after a break-in.
6. An alarm system attracts thieves.
Rest assured: alarm systems deter thieves. Most break-ins are carried out by opportunists. Unprotected houses with unalarmed windows and doors are an invitation to burglars. Why should thieves run the risk of being caught when they are more likely to get away with breaking into unprotected houses?
7. False alarms cause all sorts of trouble.

Why is it worthwhile installing an alarm system?
A burglary attempt takes place every minute in Germany. Despite this alarming statistic, about 96 percent of all houses and apartments are not yet protected by an alarm system. According to police statistics, however, the effectiveness of alarm systems is undisputed.
In 2008, for example, the Bavarian Office of Criminal Investigations examined the effectiveness of alarm systems and security technology. The results show that 1367 break-ins were prevented. This figure is probably a lot higher, as many criminals are deterred straight away once they see that a security system is installed.
